Hello and welcome to my very first blog post here! I’m Dr. Stephanos Eliades, a Cypriot–Australian General Practitioner. I trained and worked in Australia as both a GP and an Emergency Physician, and I’ve recently returned to Cyprus to set up practice and share my experience.

What’s different about being an Australian-trained GP?

Each country structures General Practice differently, and the role of GPs can vary. Training shapes how we care for patients. In Australia, General Practice is considered the foundation of the healthcare system. GPs are recognised as medical specialists and undergo rigorous training, regulation, and continuous professional development.

Training and standards
  • 5–6 years of medical school

  • 2 years of hospital training

  • 3+ years of supervised GP training

  • Specialist exams (FRACGP)

  • Ongoing annual professional development

This ensures GPs are well-prepared to manage all aspects of health care — from prevention and chronic disease management to acute illnesses and injuries.

How this shapes my work with patients

In Australia, GPs are the first point of contact for patients, often building relationships that last a lifetime — care “from cradle to grave.” Here in Cyprus, while GPs usually see patients from age 15 onwards, the principle of long-term trusted relationships remains the same.

I’ve been trained in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, chronic disease management, and in coordinating care across different services. I also advocate strongly for my patients when needed.

My areas of special interest
  • Preventive health – check-ups, immunisations, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD

  • Men’s health – including mental health

  • Minor injuries and sports injuries

  • Women’s health – contraception, menopause, reproductive health

What you can expect from me

My approach is to treat you as a whole person, not just the problem you walk in with. Your physical, mental, occupational, and family wellbeing all matter. I believe in empowering patients by explaining their options clearly and making decisions together.

If you’re looking for a GP who values collaboration, who is interested not only in treating illness but also in keeping you well, that’s what you can expect from me.
